CNN Politics Digital Adds Nicole Gaouette

She'll cover NatSec issues.

CNN Digital executive editor of politics Rachel Smolkin announced the hire of Nicole Gaouette as national security reporter for CNN Politics Digital. Her coverage areas will included terrorism, the military and foreign policy.

Not only is she new to CNN, Gaouette will be the first person in what is a new role for the organization. “This role has been under discussion for a while,” Smolkin tells FishbowlDC. “We had decided months ago that we needed to ramp up our digital coverage of national security and foreign policy, in close coordination with our wonderful television colleagues.”

For Smolkin, the recent shootings in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., and the treatment of those shootings by presidential candidates amplified the importance of building up coverage there. “The shootings do show how critically important these issues are right now–and how prominently they intersect with the 2016 campaign.”

Gaouette joins from Bloomberg News, where she was a foreign policy reporter. She covered the national security beat in previous positions at The Los Angeles Times and Christian Science Monitor. She starts Feb. 8.
