Animal Lovers Protest Animal

For “Wildlife,” its latest thematic issue, Animal magazine — never shy about inviting controversy in the name of publicity — published a photo of a Dachshund with a gun pointed in its face. The magazine and photographer Will Sherman have since been inundated with irate e-mails from passionate, if illiterate, animal lovers. The gun, Animal says, is actually a lighter.

Not quite sure how that’s better, but as publisher Bucky Turco points out, the fact that New York hosts two Dachshund festivals a year doesn’t help matters.

It seems Turco has learned a valuable lesson here: Insult comic dog puppet feigns torture of real dog? Funny. Human feigns torture of real dog? Get ready for PETA.
