A Night Out With Miss America

Katie Stam and Helen Thomas

FishbowlDC caught up with Miss America Katie Stam at last night’s Washington Press Club Foundation Congressional Dinner. A guest of CQ, Miss America was certainly the center of attention at the Ritz, taking hundreds of pictures with congressmen and journalists.

Stam actually aspires to be a broadcast journalist herself, though she says (with a smile, of course) everyone she’s met in the industry on her media tour so far tells her, “don’t do it!” She loved to anchor in Minneapolis (Indiana is home), but says “being around politics intrigues me.”

So would she want to work in DC? “I’m keeping all my options open,” she says. And based on that answer alone, we think she can handle it.

After just a week and a half, Katie says she and her handler are pros at navigating all the media attention. But just how do you become Miss America’s handler? Stam’s handler, Julie Hoffman, get this, found her job on monster.com.
