Graffiti versus Frank and Claire

Netflix released all 13 episodes of House of Cards season 5 on Tuesday morning. But Frank and Claire Underwood’s presidential ticket was in trouble before anyone could watch a minute of the new season.

Over the weekend, Netflix added to its list of fun advertising stunts for HOC by posting a faux-guerrilla video of someone defacing a Frank/Claire “Together we are strong” billboard by graffiti-ing an upside-down flag on it.

An upside-down American flag is not only the political thriller’s logo; it’s also a universal sign of dire distress, hinting that resistance to the Underwoods is spreading within the HOC world.

The billboard stunt follows the inspired decision earlier this month to have Pete Souza, the official White House photographer for President Obama, shoot “candid” shots of Frank Underwood around D.C., delightfully blurring the line between real and fictional (a HOC specialty).
