Johnson & Johnson Created a Parent's Guide to Discussing Racism With Kids

Made with help from Some Spider Studios, the guide breaks down one of the toughest talks for families

Leaders from Glossier, Shopify, Mastercard and more will take the stage at Brandweek to share what strategies set them apart and how they incorporate the most valued emerging trends. Register to join us this September 23–26 in Phoenix, Arizona.

When it comes to a complex topic like race, children are much more receptive to new information than they often get credit for. In fact, according to some studies, a child a can begin to recognize race as early as six months old. Still, it can be rather difficult to find the right language that will convey the intricacies of racism to a toddler.

But knowing that it’s important for parents to make an early effort when it comes to talking to their kids about race and, more specifically, racism, Johnson & Johnson and Some Spider Studios have teamed up for video titled “Mommy & Me, And Daddy Too.”

Created with the involvement of child development experts, the family-friendly short blends storytelling, crafts and performance to help parents navigate the conversation about racism in a way that is accessible to especially young audiences.

Clocking in at over just over 18 minutes, the guide features a reading from Jelani Memory, the founder and CEO of A Kids Book About, and an arts and crafts break with illustrator Vanessa Brantley-Newton.

It is the latest component of the partnership’s ongoing From The Start campaign, which encourages families to engage in constructive discussions about race and bias with an array resources, from infographics to curated reading lists and live discussions. Some Spider will make the guide available on the campaign’s dedicated hub alongside other similarly educational videos.

Johnson & Johnson joins the likes of family-oriented brands like P&G and Sesame Street, which have created campaigns in response to white supremacy and police violence against Black Americans.
