Corruption Detector app takes Grand Prix honors

CANNES, France—A popular mobile app that uses facial recognition is becoming an essential tool for Brazilian citizens as election time grows near, and it impressed the Mobile jury at the Cannes Lions, winning the category’s Grand Prix prize and an additional gold Lion.

“It’s a perfect embodiment of creativity, the power and utility of [mobile devices] and puts the power back in the hands of the people,” said Cannes Lions Mobile jury president Jay Morgan, innovation director of The Monkeys in Australia.

Created by Grey Brazil for Reclame Aqui, the country’s top consumer protection organization, the concept for the aptly-named Corruption Detector is smart and effective. As politicians show their faces in public or the media, people can take photos and the app scrubs databases of official corruption previously hidden in hundreds of courts. Corruption is rampant in Brazil, and the technology is putting candidates on notice with the public.

Other gold winners out of 42 Lions awarded emerged from the U.K. with three, Colombia netting two and the Netherlands, Canada and New Zealand notching one each. U.S. agencies and companies fared well, winning 15 total Lions and all gaining recognition with silver and bronze.
