Volkswagen’s Doppelganger

Yes, that is Spin City’s Michael J. Fox and Michael Boatman driving around in a Volkswagen Jetta listening to Trio’s “Da Da Da” song in a new commercial. The spot (shown here), however, isn’t for VW; rather, it promotes Spin City as part of ABC’s fall lineup.
It’s such an exact replica of the original-right down to the street scenes and the mildewed chair-that Volkswagen of America executives are giddy with excitement in the belief that viewers won’t notice the ad is for anything other than VW.
“It’s really such a nice compliment,” said VW representative Liz Vanzura, “and [it’s] free media.”
Executives at VW agency Arnold Communications in Boston-still smarting from being left in the dust by TBWA Chiat/Day for Apple Computer’s domestic ad account -noted that TBWA is the lead agency for ABC. “It’s some of the best work I’ve seen from TBWA,” said Arnold chief marketing officer Fran Kelly.
Not quite.
According to an ABC representative, the Spin City version was conceived in-house and directed by Ted Demme (nephew of Jonathan “Silence of the Lambs” Demme).-Judy Warner and Hank Kim
