“Trophy” LVCVA

A cheap blonde with expensive tastes. In life, that’s a formula for disaster. But it’s a winning concept for a spot aimed at luring tourists to Laughlin, Nev. (whose advertising falls under the purview of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and is created by R&R Partners). “I want a view of the water,” our heroine suddenly announces as she and her adoring swain drive across the desert. And this proves to be just the first in a series of “I want …” proclamations, each of them delivered in the manner of a sudden brainstorm. (Hats off to the actress for getting full mileage out of this role.) Her paunchy, graying escort looks perfectly willing to fulfill the sugar-daddy function for such a vision in pink — and why not, since (as the closing voiceover says of Laughlin), “Here, anyone can afford high-maintenance.” He and she may or may not be a match made in heaven, but they’re a perfectly suitable pair for a getaway to this economy-priced venue. The spot is lots of fun to watch, but it also does a shrewd job of positioning Laughlin — not as a destination for cheapskates (who would want to think of himself in that light?) but as a place where you can feel like you’re splurging without breaking your bank account. –Mark Dolliver
