TM Founder to Work With Richards

DALLAS Liener Temerlin, one of the co-founders in what is now Interpublic Group’s TM Advertising, is going to work for TM’s independent rival The Richards Group as a consultant, the agency said.

At Richards in Dallas, Temerlin, 77, joins his former associate Stan Richards, 73. The two advertising legends worked together for 15 years beginning in the 1960s when Temerlin led Glenn Advertising and Richards worked at a boutique shop.

“Liener and I have come full circle in our careers,” Richards said. “I am honored to be working closely with him again.”

Temerlin, who established his own Temerlin Consulting agency after departing Temerlin McClain as chairman in 2003, said he didn’t need “any time to think” about the offer from Richards.

“I truly believe The Richards Group not only is doing the best work but also is the best agency in the nation,” Temerlin said.

Temerlin, namesake of Southern Methodist University’s Temerlin Advertising Institute, has continued to work with TM as a consultant. Jim Ferguson, who also held the title of chief creative officer, succeeded Temerlin as chairman in 2003.

Temerlin’s new role with Richards will not change his role as a consultant for TM, president David Lyon said in a memo to his staff. Temerlin works with TM client ExxonMobil.

“We will, of course, continue this relationship with Liener and look forward to his continued guidance, advice and counsel,” Lyon wrote in the memo.

With more than 50 years in advertising, Temerlin has worked with clients such as American Airlines, Bank of America, Texas Instruments, Verizon, Hyatt Hotels, Quaker Oats, Pfizer and Greyhound.

Temerlin, a member of the Advertising Hall of Fame, boosted billings at Temerlin McClain in Irving, Texas, to $750 million, making it at one time the largest agency in the South. Current billings for the agency are less than half of that after the loss of some big-name clients such as JC Penney, Subaru of America and most recently, Texas Instruments.

The Richards Group, which claims annual billings of more than $1 billion, represents clients such as Home Depot, Hyundai, Corona Extra and Corona Light, Red Lobster, Chick-fil-A, Motel 6 and Fruit of the Loom.
