Qwest Gets NASA Contract Extension

DENVER — Qwest Communications International Inc. has won a $25 million, five-year contract extension providing high-speed Internet access to NASA’s research and education network.

Qwest will connect eight NASA sites in the country with the Internet service under the contract. They include NASA headquarters in Washington, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Goddard Space Flight Center and the Langley Research Center.

Qwest announced the deal Monday.

The NASA Research and Education Network, or NREN, works with other agencies and academics to demonstrate the latest networking applications.

Projects include a virtual simulation laboratory for aeronautical research and development, and remote-controlled demonstrations of robotic technologies.
