CHICAGO–Motorola’s Semiconductor Products Sector in Phoenix awarded its estimated $35 million global account to Leo Burnett here. Other finalists, said sources, were: Bozell Worldwide in New York and Foote, Cone & Belding in San Francisco. Incumbent Fogarty Klein & Partners in Houston will remain on the roster and may handle future assignments, the client said.
Retailer Taps Earle Palmer Brown
NEW YORK–Charming Shoppes chose Earle Palmer Brown, Philadelphia, to handle creative chores for its 1,100 Fashion Bug stores. Contenders for the Bensalem, Pa.-based clothing store chain’s $10 million account included: BBDO South, Atlanta; W.B. Doner & Co., Baltimore; and DeVito/Verdi and Farago & Partners, both New York. Media buying is handled by The Media Edge, New York. Fashion Bug’s advertising was handled in-house and through Fame, a division of Martin/Williams Advertising, Minneapolis.
3 Shops Vie for Software AG Account
BOSTON–Three finalists have emerged in the review for Reston, Va.-based Software AG Americas’ $5-7 million ad account. They are: The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va.; Ingalls Advertising in Boston; and Mullen in Wenham, Mass., according to consultant Skip Pile of Boston-based Pile and Co. A final decision is expected in December.
A.B. Watley Finalists Emerge
NEW YORK–A.B. Watley will hold creative presentations involving four New York agencies next week for its estimated $5 million ad account, sources said. Mad Dogs & Englishmen, DiMassimo, DiNoto Lee and DeVito/Verdi will present to the New York-based online stock brokerage. A decision is expected in two weeks. Watley executive vice president Anthony Huston declined comment. Shops either declined comment or referred calls to the client. The account has been handled in-house.
Ammirati Breaks OnStar Effort for GM
NEW YORK–Ammirati Puris Lintas unveiled the first campaign for General Motors’ OnStar on Thanksgiving Day. The spot, “Child’s Fears,” features a scared boy whose imagination is sparked by a low-fuel light. While his family drives on a dark, rainy night, the boy imagines the potential pitfalls they might encounter, including an attack by birds, hitting a deer and spinning out of control [Adweek, Oct. 27]. His fears are allayed when he envisions his father contacting OnStar, a Global Positioning Satellite communications service that provides motorists with 24-hour assistance. The tagline: “Always there to help.”
FDA Searches for Media Buyer
LOS ANGELES–The Food and Drug Administration in Rockville, Md., has issued a request for proposal to agencies nationwide for a $5 million media buying assignment. The selected shop will be asked to buy TV, radio, outdoor and newspaper media for a campaign that discourages retailers of cigarettes and smokeless tobacco from selling to minors. Parents of minors will also be targeted. Questionnaires are due at the FDA by Dec. 5.
Baldwin Joins McKinney & Silver
BOSTON–David Baldwin, a former creative director at Leonard/Monahan in Providence, R.I., will join McKinney & Silver in Raleigh, N.C. Baldwin, who abruptly resigned from the top creative post at Leonard/Monahan last summer after two years, will serve as senior vice president and executive creative director at McKinney & Silver.
