“Online Broker Cuts to 10 Agencies
NEW YORK-Online broker Datek Securities has made a cut in its $50 million review to 10 agencies, said Rob Bethge, Datek’s chief marketing officer. The recent departure of Datek’s Benjamin Nissanoff, who had been handling the search, delayed the review for about a week, Bethge said. AAR/Bob Wolf & Partners is assisting Iselin, N.J.-based Datek.

NEW YORK-BBDO Worldwide, New York, last week launched a $35 million TV campaign for Gillette Co.’s SensorExcel for women that will air in the U.S. before hitting additional markets. In several spots, women caress their legs, put on panty hose and hug children and men as turquoise silk flutters across the screen. The tagline: “Not just smooth.”

NEW YORK-Foote, Cone & Belding Worldwide has won the consolidated global account of Regus
Business Centers, a London-based firm that provides furnished office space under short-term, flexible leases. Billings were estimated at $40 million. At least 12 shops, mostly overseas,
handled pieces of the account. Ads and direct marketing were consolidated at FCB’s New York and London offices. Other shops that competed: Grey Worldwide, D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles and McCann Erickson in London. Banks Hoggins O’Shea/FCB in London will handle global branding and marketing.

CHICAGO-Publicis SA has purchased a 49 percent stake in Burrell Communications Group, the nation’s largest African American-owned agency. Terms were not disclosed. Chicago-based Burrell will remain autonomous from the Paris-based parent and from its new sister units. Burrell’s clients include McDonald’s, Bell Atlantic, Coca-Cola U.S.A., Kellogg Co. and Mobil. “If we want to go against some strong global players, we have to have in the U.S. a full range of services,” said Maurice L vy, Publicis’ CEO.

DALLAS-Internet startup has selected nine agencies as contenders for its inaugural $5 million account. Competing are GSD&M in Austin, Texas; The Richards Group in Dallas; and Houston agencies McCann-Erickson Southwest, Bates Southwest and BBDO. Also in the hunt: TFA/Leo Burnett Technology Group in Chicago, Wieden & Kennedy in Portland, Ore., and Goldberg Moser O’Neill and Young & Rubicam both in San Francisco, according to marketing manager Keith Rollman. The Austin-based online furniture sales outfit opens July 1.

CHICAGO-A bad year at Japan’s Dentsu Inc., which reported profits down nearly 7 percent and billings down 4.3 percent, has not derailed a planned alliance with Leo Burnett. “Negotiations with Dentsu are at an advanced stage, and we hope to have news on this front in the not-too-distant future,” Burnett COO Roger Haupt told staffers last week. The two announced their intention to give Dentsu a minority stake in Burnett last December.
