Mullen Among 3 in UTC Finals

-Three agencies have reached the final round of the review for United Technologies Corp.’s $4 million account, according to sources.

Mullen in Wenham, Mass., Martin/Williams of Minneapolis and Doremus in New York emerged from a field of about 20 agencies initially contacted by the client in October, sources said.

A winner is expected to be named before year’s end following presentations from the finalists. The three shops advanced based mainly on their experience with financial services clients as well as technology and industrial ac-counts, sources said.

A representative of Hartford, Conn.-based UTC said he had no updates about the reveiw. The agencies either declined comment or did not return calls.

UTC is seeking a U.S. agency to represent its brand to potential investors, the company has said. Previously, that work in both the U.S. and Europe has been handled by Euro RSCG Wnek Gosper, London, which has crafted ads tagged “Next things first.”

The company is looking for an agency to make its overall brand name as well known as its subsidiaries, in order to better compete against Boeing, GE and others, sources said. UTC’s six brands are: Carrier appliances, Sikorsky helicopters, Pratt & Whitney jet engines, Hamilton Sunstrand aerospace systems, Otis elevators and UTC fuel cells.

Crafting an umbrella position for UTC as a whole—encompassing but not overshadowing those diverse units—is a key element of the pitch, sources said.
