a matter of degrees

Chris Colbert, president of Holland Mark Advertising, may help run the region’s largest independent agency, but he still had a few things to learn about business.

Colbert recently completed the 20-month executive MBA program at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, to “expand my global perspective,” he said. Fond memories of keg parties, football games and fraternity initiations had nothing to do with his decision to go back to school.

The program, which employs distance learning because most students live far away from campus, consists of five terms. Each term begins with a two- to three-week residency around the world.

Colbert spent time studying corporate procedures in Frankfurt, Prague, Beijing, Hong Kong, Sao Paulo and Buenos Aires. He used extra vacation time to cover his 11 weeks of residencies and most of his weekends were spent studying. Colbert was the only ad agency student this year.

“I believe that every business is becoming global,” said Colbert. “I believe in life-long learning.”
