Hoping to Help Young People, The CDC Waits for a Contract

Iam writing in reference to an Adweek Online article [Sept. 5], titled “CDC Embarks on Youth Initiative.”

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been asked by Congress to prepare itself for additional work targeted at youth, and the goals and audiences are correctly reported in the article, the CDC has neither been assured of the appropriation nor a potential launch date.

Porter Novelli did prepare briefing materials on youth for the CDC to present to Congress. But without an appropriation to date, no contract has been awarded, nor have we solicited proposals on this project.

For the Record: In a letter by Kirk Whisler, president of the Latino Print Network [Letters, Aug. 21], a spending figure was incorrect. National advertisers spent $170 million on ads in Hispanic publications in 1999, with ad sales up 425 percent since 1990.
