Highway One Founder Built Legacy

SAN FRANCISCO—Andrea Metzler, 47, president and founder of Highway One, died Nov. 7 after a long struggle with breast cancer. The 17-year ad and marketing veteran is credited with building the agency by attracting a number of blue-chip clients. As part of the D’Arcy network, the agency is now owned by Bcom3. An elder at the Moraga Valley Presbyterian Church, Metzler is survived by her husband and two teenage children.

Deutsch Gets Serious About DirectTV

LOS ANGELES—DirecTV and its agency Deutsch, Los Angeles, released a series of new commercials last week. The four spots portray DirecTV customers and their serious attitude about the many channels the company offers. In two of the ads, “Jealous Neighbor” and “Little Girl,” a DirecTV installer is quizzed about the 225 channels available to customers from DirecTV. The 30-second ads are slated to appear on network and network cable stations such as ABC, NBC and TBS.

Publicis Lands International Prize

LOS ANGELES—Publicis’ Paris office will be handling the information campaign for Euro notes and coins for the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance & Industry, the agency reported last week. The Publicis Groupe in France also handled Euro advertising for the European Central Bank, German Bundesbank and the Netherlands Euro changeover board.

Fallon Breaks Second ‘Cat Herder’ Spot

CHICAGO—Fallon’s follow-up to its well-received “Cat Herders” spot for EDS breaks during Monday Night Football. The Minneapolis shop is now working on what its president David Lubars calls “a grand, epic production” for EDS to air during this year’s Super Bowl.

Inventiva Lands First R.J. Reynolds’ Hispanic Push

DALLAS—Inventiva will be peddling tobacco and liquor products following two recent account wins worth $3-5 million. San Antonio, Texas-based Inventiva was tapped last month as the winner of a national review for the first-time Hispanic advertising account of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings in Winston-Salem, N.C. The agency has also been selected to handle initial Hispanic advertising for Christian Brothers’ brandy, owned by Heaven Hill Distilleries in Bardstown, Ky.

Cadillac Escalade Ads Go Online

DETROIT—Cadillac kicks off the 2002 campaign for its Escalade sports utility vehicle with streaming video ads aimed at affluent, tech-savvy customers. Caddy’s interactive agency, NOVO in San Francisco, designed and produced the banners with assistance from the automaker’s lead agency, D’Arcy, in Troy, Mich.

Cliff Freeman Takes Hardee’s $80 Mil. Business

NEW YORK—Cliff Freeman and Partners has won Hardee’s estimated $80 million account, besting TBWA\Chiat\Day in Playa del Rey, Calif., WestWayne in Atlanta and The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va.
