Kraft Sets Media Consolidation Review

CHICAGO—Kraft Foods will hear from four of its incumbent media agencies as it looks to consolidate its general market media planning and buying in the U.S. and Canada. Vying for the estimated $800 million business are Chicago shops Starcom MediaVest Group and FCB/TN Media, as well as MindShare in New York and OMD/Canada in Toronto. Not part of the pitch are The Lord Group, which handles some planning duties for the Northfield, Ill., company, and Media Edge in New York. A decision is expected by the end of the year, according to company officials.

Chicago Tribune Columnist Lazarus Dies

CHICAGO—Chicago Tribune marketing columnist George Lazarus died Friday morning while on his commute by train to work. Lazarus, who was 68, had covered advertising and marketing for more than 40 years as a columnist for the Tribune, the Chicago Daily News and Chicago Today. He also contributed to Adweek’s Marketing Week and the New York Daily News. The cause of death was unknown.

It’s Showtime for Burnett, Starcom

CHICAGO—Showtime Networks awarded its advertising and media duties on its $35-40 million account to Leo Burnett and Starcom USA here after a three month review. The Chicago-based shops beat out incumbents Young & Rubicam and Media Edge, DDB Worldwide, TN Media/Bozell Worldwide, Zenith Media/Saatchi & Saatchi, all in New York, as well as GSD&M in Austin, Tex.

ADC Taps Campbell Mithun

CHICAGO—ADC Telecommunications, which provides equipment, software and integration services for broadband networks, named Campbell Mithun its marketing communications agency. The $10 million business-to-business account will be handled by the Minneapolis shop’s professional services and technology business unit. A multimedia advertising campaign is expected to break in early 2001. ADC’s last known agency was Periscope Marketing Communications in Minneapolis.

Colle & McVoy Acquires Sandcastle Group

CHICAGO—Colle & McVoy has acquired The Sandcastle Group, an advertising agency specializing in consumers over 50. Sandcastle will be redubbed Colle & McVoy’s Mature Marketing Division, working for clients including American Express Retirement Services, Medica and the Minnesota Department of Health. Employees of The Sandcastle Group will be relocated to C&M’s Bloomington, Minn., offices.

FCB’s Smith Joins Ogilvy & Mather

CHICAGO—Tim Smith will join Ogilvy & Mather here next month as a managing partner and chief finance and business officer. Smith, who was previously regional director of finance and operations for FCB Chicago, will take over some of the duties previously managed by Kathleen Brookbanks, who is heading up MindShare’s Chicago operations. He will also oversee finance, information technology and human resources. He will report to Linda Garrison, the office’s managing director.
