Pizza Wars End in NAD Self-Regulation
ATLANTA–Following Pizza Hut’s recent challenge of rival Papa John’s accuracy in advertising, the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus in New York has determined that Papa John’s has a reasonable basis to support its claim of “Better ingredients. Better pizza.” in a non-comparative context, such as on take-out boxes. The National Advertising Division recommended, though, that Papa John’s ads–which lately have taken direct shots at Dallas-based Pizza Hut–limit superiority claims only to Pizza Hut’s regular and thin crust version, not its pan-style product. Papa John’s, located in Louisville, Ky., said it disagreed with the latter decision, but would comply. Atlanta’s Fricks/Firestone is Papa John’s agency of record.
