A Y&R Wins Farmland Beef Assignment
CHICAGO–Young & Rubicam here beefed up its client roster with Farmland National Beef Packing Co.’s estimated $10 million account. The agency was awarded responsibility for commodity and beef branded products after a competition with Bernstein-Rein, Kansas City, Mo. Farmland, also in Kansas City, is the fourth largest beef packing company in the nation. Its 1998 sales were
nearly $9 billion.
A Agency Sought for Frozen Food Account
LOS ANGELES–Specialty Brands, a unit of food company IBP, is conducting a search for an agency to handle a new assignment. A West Coast shop with packaged goods experience is preferred, but the Riverside, Calif., client is also considering agencies in the Midwest and Southwest for its estimated $3.5 million-plus account. The assignment is to launch its new brand of frozen Mexican food called Jose Ole. Select Resources International, Los Angeles, is the consultant.
A Blockbuster Thanks the Academy
DETROIT–Blockbuster will break a new spot during the Academy Awards broadcast March 26. The spot features Carly Simon singing the Beatles song “Act Naturally,” behind childhood photos of notable Hollywood stars, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Lemmon and Danny Glover. The ad was created by the Dallas company’s lead agency, Doner, in Southfield, Mich.
A Margeotes Crosses Itself Off Review List
BOSTON–Margeotes/Fertitta + Partners has withdrawn from the ongoing review for A.T. Cross’ $7 million advertising account, sources said. Remaining in the hunt for the Lincoln, R.I., pen maker are Bates USA, New York, and Carmichael Lynch in Minneapolis. The client currently has no agency of record.
A GM to Break New BuyPower Ads
LOS ANGELES–A new TV commercial breaking nationally during the March 26 Academy Awards telecast aims to position General Motors’ BuyPower program as a practical clicks-and-mortar alternative to third-party Internet car buying services. The 30-second spot from D’Arcy Masius Benton & Bowles, Los Angeles, uses time-lapse photography in presenting a Chevy Tahoe sport utility vehicle against the New York skyline. A voiceover states that the exact vehicle pictured can be found at a GM dealer in Floral Park, N.Y., or at GM’s Web site, “where you’ll get the dealer’s best price.” Part of an estimated $30 million campaign, the spot closes with the site’s logo and the tagline, “Come take a look at”
A LJS Decision Coming Soon
CHICAGO–A decision is expected shortly in Long John Silver’s review on its $35 million creative account. Contenders Fallon McElligott and Campbell Mithun Esty, both Minneapolis, and Rubin Postaer and Associates, Chicago and Santa Monica, Calif., made final presentations to the Lexington, Ky., client last week, sources said.
