America West Prepares Long List
LOS ANGELES–America West Airlines has issued questionnaires to agencies across the country as part of its preliminary screening in the review for its $20 million advertising account. Achenbaum Bogda Associates of New York is conducting the search on behalf of the client. Among the shops contacted: BBDO West, McCann-Erickson and Grey Advertising, all in Los Angeles; Deutsch in Santa Monica, Calif., and New York; EvansGroup in Seattle; Gotham in New York; and J. Walter Thompson in San Francisco. McCann will not compete due to a conflict with USAir, sources said. The agencies and client declined comment.
Mazda to Conduct Credentials Meetings
LOS ANGELES–Mazda Motor of America will hold a series of credentials meetings with four or five shops starting this week in the review for its estimated $250 million ad account. The contender list will then be cut to three finalists, sources said. Agencies that have been contacted include: Ogilvy & Mather in Los Angeles; Deutsch in New York and Santa Monica, Calif.; W.B. Doner & Co. in Southfield, Mich.; and GSD&M in Austin, Texas. Mazda and agency executives declined comment.
Bay Networks Narrows Contender List
LOS ANGELES–Bay Networks has selected four finalists in the review for the creative portion of its $10-12 million ad account: Hanft Byrne Raboy Abrams & Partners and Mezzina/Brown, both in New York; Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos in Boston; and Amazon Advertising in San Francisco. The agencies will make presentations Sept. 24-25. A decision is expected Sept. 25. Mike Marsak of Effective Marketing Strategies in Marina del Rey, Calif., is the review consultant.
‘Mercury News’ Initiates Agency Review
SAN FRANCISCO–The San Jose Mercury News has put its $1.5-2 million ad account into review. Company executives are talking with nine agencies in the Bay Area and plan to select a new shop in November. Incumbent McCann-Erickson in San Francisco has declined to participate in the review.

Citron Haligman Bedecarrƒ in San Francisco has picked up the interactive media buying assignment for its client Dreyfus mutual funds. Dreyfus will be expanding its brokerage services on the Internet through the acquisition of online brokerage firm Pacific Brokerage Services in Beverly Hills, Calif. The interactive media assignment had previously been handled in-house. The agency has also added media buying and planning duties to its $10-12 million PowerBar account . . . DDB Needham in San Francisco landed Ore-Ida Foods’ $10-15 million Bagel Bites account last week. The other contender was Goldberg Moser O’Neill, also in San Francisco. Foote, Cone & Belding in San Francisco resigned the account in June.
