Temerlin McClain Lays Off 60 Staffers

DALLAS—Sixty employees were dismissed earlier this month at Temerlin McClain in Irving, Texas, sources said. The layoffs represented 5-10 percent of the agency’s workforce, although the shop declined to confirm specific numbers. Temerlin president David Lyon indicated the reduction was related to a restructuring of the agency’s business activities, adding that new hires in specific fields such as relationship marketing, interactive, database and direct marketing equalled the number of employees let go in other, traditional areas. “Our business is transforming,” Lyon said. “Our clients are asking us to deliver in those areas and it more than offset what happened last week.”

Marketing Chief Resigns at J.C. Penney

DALLAS—J.C. Penney’s chief marketing officer, Stephen Farley, has resigned in the wake of poor third-quarter financial results. Farley joined Penney last summer from Payless ShoeSource. He was responsible for firing Penney’s previous agency, Temerlin McClain, and managing a review which awarded the retailer’s advertising account to DDB Worldwide in Chicago. A spokesperson for the company said management is pleased with the new advertising campaign and that Farley’s resignation does not affect its relationship with DDB. Mike Boylson, the No. 2 marketing executive at the Plano, Texas-based merchant, will manage the department until a new chief marketing officer is named.

Southwest Bank Appoints 4 Finalists

DALLAS—Southwest Bank of Texas has confirmed four finalists in the review for its $2-4 million account. Vying for the Houston-based banking concern are incumbent Sachnowitz & Co., Bates Southwest, BBDO and Fogarty Klein Monroe, all in Houston. A decision is expected in December. The client, which operates 26 branches, bills itself as the largest independent bank in the area.

AdForce to Sell Ads for BigFatWow

DALLAS—BigFatWow has signed an agreement making AdForce its exclusive representative to sell online advertising nationwide. Irving, Texas-based BigFatWow delivers advertising on its large plasma screen “Wow Centers” in shopping centers. AdForce is located in Cupertino, Calif.

Agency Drops Out of Sub-Zero Review

CHICAGO—Carmichael Lynch has withdrawn from the review for Sub-Zero’s $8-10 million account, citing a conflict with public relations client Maytag/Jenn-Air. Remaining in the hunt for the Madison, Wis.-based business are incumbent Kerker and fellow Minneapolis sh op Martin/Williams, The Richards Group in Dallas and The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va. A decision is expected by year’s end. Carmichael Lynch is based in Minneapolis.
