CHICAGO-The Chicago Mercantile Exchange is talking to agencies about its account, currently at Lois USA, Chicago. “We’re evaluating our overall advertising efforts to determine if they’re up to speed with the changing environment of our industry,” said Ellen Resnick, a Merc representative. Spending was estimated by sources at $3 million.
“Fogarty Klein Joins Hard Rock Hunt
CHICAGO-Fogarty Klein 312 here has emerged as a late addition vying for a $4-6 million image assignment for the Hard Rock Cafe. Already contending for the business are Fountainhead Advertising in Atlanta and Wieden & Kennedy in Portland, Ore. Fogarty presented credentials to the Orlando, Fla.-based restaurant chain last week, and a decision is expected in June, sources said.

CHICAGO-Shops contacted by FTD following the Downers Grove, Ill.-based florist’s split with Doner include DDB Worldwide, Leo Burnett, Young & Rubicam, Foote, Cone & Belding, Ammirati Puris Lintas and Cramer-Krasselt, all Chicago, according to sources. FTD and the new plan to hire one or more agencies.
“Marc Acquires Caldwell VanRiper
CHICAGO-Marc USA in Pittsburgh has acquired $38 million agency Caldwell VanRiper in Indianapolis, and will rename it Caldwell VanRiper/Marc. Marc has been on an acquisition roll, buying agencies in Chicago, Dallas and Miami in the last year to claim total network billings of $370 million. The company plans to expand to New York, San Francisco, Boston and Seattle this year.
“Wisconsin Tourism Assigned, Protested
CHICAGO-The Wisconsin Department of Tourism awarded its $5 million account to Advertising, Boelter & Lincoln, which has offices in Milwaukee and Madison, Wis. The decision is being protested by incumbent Laughlin/Constable, Milwaukee, a finalist along with BVK/McDonald, Glendale, Wis. A client representative said the matter is in the hands of attorneys.
“Kmart Links With Star Wars
CHICAGO-Kmart Corp. targets moms in a new print and TV campaign linking the Troy, Mich.-based retailer and the new Star Wars film The Phantom Menace. One TV spot features a boy in his bedroom playing with Star Wars toys and talking about the values the films have imparted on him; he likens his dad to Obi-Wan Kenobi. The campaign from Campbell Mithun Esty, Minneapolis, is tagged, “Like no other place on earth.”

CHICAGO-Cramer-Krasselt in Milwaukee has picked up additional assignments from Northland Cranberries, taking over the Seneca, TreeSweet and Awake juice brands. Billings were not disclosed.
