Gross Joins Lycos as U.S. Marketing Chief

BOSTON — Steven Gross has joined Internet portal Terra Lycos as U.S. vp, marketing, responsible for domestic marketing, promotions and customer relationship management.

Gross had been chief marketing and sales officer with Westboro, Mass.-based Arch Wireless, a provider of email and other messaging technology. Jim Corboy, who had been vp, marketing of Terra Lycos for the past several years, left the company several months ago.

Terra Lycos has worked with Interpublic Group agency Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos, Boston, since 2000 to advertise its Lycos brand. Ads have been tagged, “Whatever you’re into, dig into it deeper. On Lycos.” The separate Terra brand is handled through Ogilvy & Mather, New York. Each brand receives $20-25 million in annual ad support, according to CMR.

Barcelona, Spain-based Terra System in 2000 bought Waltham, Mass.-based Lycos Network for $12.5 billion, forming the current company. The company ranks among the world’s largest ISP, with some 100 million users per month, and primarily competes with AOL Time Warner, StarMedia Network and Yahoo!
