FCB Cuts S.F. Staff 12 Percent

Citing the economic slowdown, FCB Worldwide here cut its workforce by 12 percent Wednesday.

Roughly 30 workers were let go in all departments.

FCB’s New York office is defending its $400 million AT&T Wireless account in a review.

“This was an extremely difficult but necessary decision for this agency to make in response to the reduction in revenue for the San Francisco office,” the agency said in a terse statement. The shop also considered consolidating the Compaq Computer account at FCB New York.

Layoffs have made the rounds of Northern California agencies since January — particularly at shops that bulked up during the dot-com boom of 1999.
