Dailey Taps New CCO

After 35 years, Dailey & Associates is hiring a new chief creative officer. Michael Folino, a veteran adman who most recently worked at TBWA\Chiat\Day, is set to join Dec. 9 and succeed Cliff Einstein as the top creative executive at the West Hollywood, Calif., agency.

Einstein, 63, has held the top position since the agency opened in 1967. He said he will remain in his post as CEO. Folino, 37, will report to Einstein.

“This is not about me lightening my load or moving toward retirement,” said Einstein. “This is something I wanted initiated by me instead of something done to me.” He added that no ad executive in the U.S. has held the position of chief creative officer at a major agency for a longer period of time.

A native of L.A. who has worked in the area for most of his career, Folino left TBWA\C\D in October after working mostly on Adidas and Sony PlayStation. Prior to his two-year stint there, he helped establish Fallon L.A., where he also worked for two years. Before that, he spent four years each at Wieden + Kennedy in Portland, Ore., and Team One in El Segundo, Calif.

“It is remarkable how Cliff has embraced this change,” said Folino. “He has been so encouraging toward me. I am excited about working with him and learning from him.”

Folino said he is eager to pitch in on all the accounts at the shop. “Dailey is a great environment because I will have the tools I need to really affect an account,” said Folino.

In the past, his work has leaned toward ironic humor. In one memorable spot for Nike during an NBA labor dispute, Spike Lee was seen taunting opposing players at a grade school basketball game because he apparently needed his hoops fix.
