Crispin Porter + Bogusky’s “King” character for Burger King, introduced last September, is a man wearing an immovable, widely grinning plastic mask. Appearing out of nowhere in odd places, such as in bed with people, he is just a little, well, creepy. So, we were surprised to see a similar character pop up in two Quaker Oats spots this month (for its Chewy Granola Bars and Fruit and Oatmeal cereal bowls). One shows the Quaker Oats Man—whose grin resembles the King, but who is entirely plastic—giving out granola bars on the side of a road, and one is in a school.
