Aol Ups Adspend, Starts Search

America Online will more than double its U.S. ad spending to about $300 million next year and has begun a media review, the company said last week. The incumbent, IPG’s Initiative Media, has been invited to defend, the Dulles, Va.-based client said. Pile and Co. in Boston is overseeing the search. RFPs will be sent out next month; a decision is due in January. Among the unconflicted shops are Publicis’ MediaVest and Starcom, and Omnicom’s OMD. Meanwhile, Grey in London won AOL’s estimated $40-50 million creative account in Britain, sources said. Incumbent Mortimer Whittaker O’Sullivan in London will remain on the roster, said a source.
