AMD Starts Search as McCann Pursues Intel

SAN FRANCISCO Advanced Micro Devices has launched a review for its ad account after splitting with Interpublic Group’s McCann Erickson, which handled the business at its office here, sources said.

Sources said the decision to terminate the three-year relationship was precipitated at least partly by McCann’s desire to participate in the ongoing review for Intel’s $300 million global business. In that review, McCann is leading an IPG team against agencies from rival holding companies Omnicom Group and WPP Group.

“Over the past two years we’ve been proud to work with the team at AMD. They’re a great group and we wish them much success in the future,” said Courtney Buechert, evp and gm of McCann in San Francisco, in a statement. The agency declined further comment.

AMD in Sunnyvale, Calif., has spent less than $5 million on ads in each of the past two years, per Nielsen Monitor-Plus. WPP’s SicolaMartin in Austin, Texas, also works for the client.

AMD officials did not return calls seeking comment.
