GustinCurtis in Reno bested three undisclosed crosstown rivals to win the $750,000 Wingfield Springs Golf Community account. The agency was formed earlier this year through the merger of two local shops: Mark Curtis Inc. and Gustin & Nakamoto. Sash Nakamoto, a former partner at the latter, will remain with the new agency as a design consultant. He plans to retire sometime next year.

The Hazelnut Marketing Board, an organization representing hazelnut growers and handlers in Oregon, named Swearingen Advertising in Portland as its agency. The shop’s initial projects include creating magazine advertising and technical literature targeting the food manufacturing industry.
The agency formerly known as McKinney Johnson Amato has split into McKinney Johnson Marketing and Amato Communications. Terry Amato will continue to service his accounts, including The Portland Bridal Show and The Portland Luggage Co., at Amato Communications, based in Lake Oswego. McKinney Johnson, headed by Bob Johnson and Liz McKinney Johnson, will remain in downtown Portland and retain accounts including The New Home Sewing Machine Co., Cascade Ice Cream Co. and Atlas Pro Systems. The three former partners had run McKinney Johnson Amato since 1991.
Adventist Health hired Willis Advertising in Los Angeles to create a united branding effort for Adventist Health Doctors and Hospitals in Los Angeles County. The agency’s campaign, with executions in English, Spanish and Armenian, uses a new tag: “Choose wisely. Choose Adventist Health Doctors and Hospitals.” It will run through Nov. 23.
WinAir, the Salt Lake City-based airline that recently launched service from Long Beach, has hired Perceive in Long Beach to handle creative work and Mediaspot in Newport Beach to handle media research, planning and buying duties.
Richard O’Brien, a founding partner of Sims Freeman O’Brien and former president of Alcone Sims O’Brien (now Alcone Marketing Group), died Oct. 31 in White Plains, N.Y. He was 60. O’Brien retired from Alcone in 1994.

Seattle advertising and public relations agency KNCF/Dave recently changed its name to KNCB/Dave and relocated to the Watermark Tower Building at 1109 First Ave. in Seattle. The name change reflects the agency’s addition of John Beyer as president. Beyer most recently served as vice president and managing director of Real Networks’ European, African and Middle Eastern subsidiaries. He has also worked for McCaw Cellular and AT&T Wireless.
Seattle-based WongDoody added the Virginia Mason Medical Center to its roster of clients. The agency will develop a multimedia branding campaign and assist in overall marketing positioning work. A new campaign is planned for early 1999.
The Seattle Times selected direct marketing agency The Hacker Group in Bellevue to create a new strategic approach to subscription development using direct mail. The agency has also been selected to handle direct marketing duties for Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle Corp. and Cellular One San Francisco.
