Years in prison that a Virginia jury recommended for spammer extraordinaire Jeremy Jaynes, convicted last week in the nation’s first felony prosecution of junk e-mail senders. Jaynes and his sister, Jessica DeGroot, were found guilty of masking their return Internet addresses to send thousands of bulk e-mails selling software and stock tips. (DeGroot was fined $7,500 but spared jail time. A third defendant, Richard Rutowski, was acquitted.) Evidence seized from Jaynes’ Raleigh, N.C., home included computer disks containing 84 million AOL e-mail addresses.
