NYT Now, the news app from The New York Times, was transformed into a free app partly because no one wanted to pay for it.
According to The Wall Street Journal, NYT Now only had 20,000 paying subscribers, which was a far cry from the 200,000 the Times was expecting.
The change from paid app to free app signaled a change in philosophy for the Times. No longer would the paper be so heavy-handed. Now the strategy is to lure new subscribers with free content via a variety of platforms.
“We need to be wherever readers are, regardless of the platform,” Kinsey Wilson, the Times’ editor for innovation and strategy, told the Journal.
