U.S. Media Briefly Pays Attention to Soccer... for Reasons Having Nothing to Do With the Sport
In most of the world, soccer (football) substitutes for religion. In the United States — aside from the invasion of David Beckham — the Beautiful Game struggles for mainstream press, except when religion’s involved.
Until yesterday, Chase Hilgenbrinck was captain of the New England Revolution’s reserves team. Then, according to Jimmy Golen at the Associated Press, the 26-year-old defender had a change of heart, retiring to join the seminary.
Predictably, mainstream media outlets throughout the country ran the story, inching Americans ever-closer to accepting the sport.
Now if only Becks could convert to something other than Scientology…
