Walt Disney Co. and News Corp. announced a joint venture to launch a new service that will provide movies and other entertainment content on demand.

The venture, called Movies.com, is expected to launch in early 2002 in the U.S. The companies said the service will be available to consumers with enhanced cable systems with on-demand capabilities as well as all forms of broadband Internet access.

The service will feature live-action films and other content from Walt Disney Studios, including its Miramax Film division, Twentieth Century Fox and others.
