Sun Microsystems Selects Lowe & Partners/SMS





NEW YORK–Lowe & Partners/SMS here on Friday was named agency of record for Sun Microsystem’s $60-70 million account. The win followed a review that also involved Kirshenbaum Bond & Partners, TBWA Chiat/Day, Venice, Calif., and Ingalls Moranville Advertising, San Francisco. Sources said Kirshenbaum was eliminated right before the final round because the agency and client could not agree on strategic direction. The other three contenders proceeded to made creative presentations.





Suissa Miller Unveils Acura Repositioning Ad





LOS ANGELES–Suissa Miller last week broke a 30-second ad on network TV for the Acura RL. The ad opens with a shot of the car, followed by the question: ‘What is an RL?’ Shots of the car in various settings, such as a black tie event, are intercut with answers: performance, elegance and comfort. Operatic music plays in the background. The spot is the first in a series of ads designed to reposition the Acura brand, according to agency president Bruce Miller. It also introduces the tagline ‘The True Definition of Luxury. Yours.’





More Cuts at Rogge Effler & Partners Revealed





LOS ANGELES–Two more executives of Rogge Effler & Partners departed the Los Angeles agency two weeks ago as part of a restructuring, chairman and chief executive Don Effler confirmed last week. Chuck Maggio, vice president and financial director, and Gary Larsen, vice president and associate creative director, have exited. Larsen is a former partner of new Rogge Effler creative director Rick Colby. Three other executives have left: president Pat Rogge; senior vice president and creative director Pam Cunningham and senior vice president Don Popielarz (Adweek, April 7).





Moffett-Pence Takes Helm of Denver Agency





LOS ANGELES–Stephanie Moffett-Pence joins McClain Finlon Advertising in Denver as president today, a post previously filled by Cathey McClain Finlon. The move allows Finlon to focus on agency planning, finance and new business as she becomes chairman and chief executive officer. Moffett-Pence, who most recently served as director of marketing and communications and brand management at U S West Communications, will be responsible for strategic planning and overseeing all agency services.

Logitech has awarded its estimated $5-10 million account to Young & Rubicam’s San Francisco office after a review that included Saatchi & Saatchi and incumbent Woolward & Partners, both in San Francisco. . . Winston Advertising in Santa Clara, Calif., has won the $2-4 million Concentric Network account. . . Lexmark International in Lexington, Ky., has returned national consumer ad duties for computer printers to Grey Advertising’s New York office from Goldberg Moser O’Neill in San Francisco. The shift consolidates the client’s advertising at Grey.
