The final of the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament featuring England against Italy was viewed by almost half of the U.K. population setting a record for a TV viewing soccer audience.

A peak of 31 million viewers across the U.K. watched Italy defeat England on penalties to become the new champions of Europe. This match followed the month-long football tournament played in cities spanning Russia, the U.K., Italy and other nations.

The previous record for a soccer audience was Italia 90 when England played West Germany in front of a combined British audience of 29.2
