Twitter marked World Press Freedom Day Monday (May 3) with the start of its global #FollowLocalJournalists campaign.

The social network organized a global day of action Monday centered around the #FollowLocalJournalists hashtag, encouraging everyday news consumers, journalism advocacy organizations and prominent national reporters to share impactful examples of local journalism and help elevate the reporters who contributed to that work.

Twitter said #FollowLocalJournalists will be the theme of @TwitterNews advocacy work, events and training throughout the year.

The company ran online and print ads in 28 local newspapers across the U.S.
