The top categories for new magazine launches in 2013 were food (23 new magazines), regional (17 magazines), and women (13 new magazines). In the fourth quarter of 2013, new titles launched included Politico Magazine, Scottsdale Magazine, Punch, Allrecipes, and Domino. Other new launches in 2013 included three new magazines targeting the Hamptons, NY region. In the Hispanic category, several new magazines launched including Glam Belleza Latina and Rica.

In addition, print magazines such as Pitchfork Review, Clevver Magazine, Allrecipes, Politico Magazine and PoliticoPro Magazine were spun off from other platforms–online publications, websites, or a YouTube Channel.

Among the top categories for magazine closures was sports magazines, with Snow and Skateboarder shutting down. Other magazines that closed included Babytalk and Parenting.

“Once again 2013 continued the trend of both fewer magazine launches and fewer closures,” said Trish Hagood, president of Mediafinder.com.

In the business-to-business magazine sector, 20 new titles launched in 2013, including G-Code, compared to 31 titles launched in 2012. In the same period, 14 titles ceased, including BtoB and Fire Chief, compared to 16 titles ceased in 2012.
