Apple unveiled a new option for podcast creators and publishers at its Spring Loaded event on Tuesday: Paid subscriptions. While Apple Podcasts will continue to offer ad-supported audio, this move signals new consumer revenue for the tech giant and a direct challenge to Spotify.

Podcast publishers that wish to enable subscriptions have to pay $19.99 to enroll in the Apple Podcasters Program, which also offers creation tools. From there, they can set their own prices, but Apple takes a cut.
