Unpacking the Cannes Lions 2025 Award Scandals

With the ad world’s glitziest awards under fire, can Cannes Lions fix its credibility crisis?

The ad world’s glitziest awards are under fire. Can Cannes Lions fix its credibility crisis?

For all its rosé-soaked glamor, red carpet photo-ops, and standing ovations, Cannes Lions 2025 will be remembered for something less flattering: scandal.

On this episode of Adspeak, ADWEEK’s editor-in-Chief Ryan Joe, agency reporter Audrey Kemp, and brand editor Rebecca Stewart unpack one of the most controversial Cannes in recent memory.

It started in the weeks after the festival, when Brazilian shop DM9 was exposed for using AI to fabricate a CNN Brasil news segment in a case study for Whirlpool’s “Efficient Way to Pay” campaign. The fallout was swift, with the agency’s Data Grand Prix win—and two other awards—swiftly withdrawn. The agency’s creative chief also stepped down.

Then came LePub São Paulo, which drew fire over its Bronze Lion–winning campaign for New Balance and São Paulo FC. The work reportedly included unverifiable sales data and lacked client signoff. New Balance later confirmed it hadn’t approved the submission at all.

Since then, campaigns from Gut Amsterdam, Talented India, and FCB India have faced similar accusations.

In response, Cannes organizers are rolling out sweeping integrity reforms: mandatory AI disclosures, dual human-and-AI fact-checking, senior client signoffs, an Integrity Council to vet entries, and even three-year bans for agencies caught gaming the system.

Of course, accusations of “Cannes bait” and scam ads aren’t new; they’ve been whispered about for over a decade. However, the Lions have long stood as the industry’s benchmark of creative excellence.

Now, with AI muddying the waters, the industry is asking itself a more challenging question: are we still rewarding bold, meaningful work, or just those who know how to work the system?
