Liquid I.V. Swaps Singing Toilets for F1 Precision in Its McLaren Debut

The brand’s first campaign under its McLaren deal features F1 drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri

Liquid I.V. is using its partnership with McLaren Racing to position hydration as a performance essential, launching a new campaign featuring Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

The “Thirst for More” ad uses a split screen to draw parallels between the testing, measuring, and precision behind McLaren Racing and Liquid I.V.’s approach to hydration science.

Extreme heat during a race can cause dehydration, affecting drivers’ reaction times, focus, and endurance. The ad opens with the line: “It’s another hot one today, stay hydrated out there.” Sports and entertainment agency UEG Worldwide is behind the spot.

It is the first campaign to come out of the electrolyte brand’s multi-year sponsorship deal with the McLaren Mastercard F1 Team, under which it became the team’s official functional hydration partner.

Brittany Shaw, vice president of integrated marketing at Liquid I.V., said the two partners are a natural fit, as both advocate that performance can be continually improved through science and innovation.

“It allows us to take ideas like testing, precision, preparation and endurance out of a lab and put them into a world where those things have very visible consequences,” Shaw said.

Standing out in a crowded market

The hydration and electrolytes category is increasingly crowded and marketing-heavy. To cut through, Liquid I.V. is banking on “product efficacy and credible science,” Shaw said.

The 30-second spot marks a shift from Liquid I.V.’s Super Bowl commercial, which featured a collection of singing toilets encouraging people to check the color of their urine.

Liquid I.V.’s creative approach has long been to find unexpected ways to challenge category norms, said Shaw.

“Sometimes that means humor and absurdity, like you saw at the Super Bowl,” she said, adding that the McLaren campaign had to be different.

“We’re entering a world built around precision, preparation and relentless optimization, so the creative expression should reflect that,” Shaw continued.

The F1 campaign and broader partnership will be measured on both brand equity and commercial performance. One of the most important things Shaw will be tracking is whether it “strengthens” what Liquid I.V. means to consumers, she said: “As a brand, we’re focused on building stronger associations with product efficacy, credibility and relevance in people’s everyday lives.”

Threaded throughout all of Liquid I.V.’s work is an “attitude” rather than a set aesthetic, Shaw explained.

“Liquid I.V. wants to challenge the expected way hydration is portrayed and make something people actually want to engage with,” she said.
