Following in the fab four’s footsteps

Sexcity1It may be the Manolo Blahniks of DVDs. To celebrate today’s release of its $299, 20-disk “ultimate” Sex and the City collection, HBO has arranged freebies and discount deals at New York City haunts visited by Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. Be it free shoe rentals at Bowl-Mor lanes or discounted sushi rolls at Sushisamba, HBO is encouraging fans to wear pink and retrace the steps of the fab four. It’s a cute idea, but as Carrie might wonder, can chasing giveaways around Manhattan save someone enough to splurge on a $299 DVD collection? Samantha and Charlotte probably wouldn’t bother. And I find it hard to believe the people motivated enough to traipse around the city for $6 cosmos at Taj would be willing to shell out that much for something they can watch for free on TBS, especially when the sum can get you a very nice bag at Coach. I for one was more intrigued by HBO’s more traditional subway ads, with lines like, “All the close encounters” and “All the hopping on and getting off.” Hopefully, the double entendre was lost on the 4th-grade class en route to a field trip. UPDATE: Gothamist is angry about a bunch of pink decals that have been plastered on sidewalks in NYC as part of this promotion.
