The Late Late Show with James Corden wasn't kidding about trying to beat Spike's new rival series (also combining cars and karaoke) to the punch.
Today, CBS Television Studios announced that Apple Music had landed global rights to Carpool Karaoke, a series based on the wildly popular segment from The Late Late Show. It will be created and produced by Corden and Late Late Show executive producer Ben Winston.
The weekly series will consist of 16 episodes, in which celebrities ride along with the host and "visit places meaningful to the celebrity," according to the release. A host (which is very unlikely to be Corden) and premiere date will be announced later.
CBS said Carpool Karaoke will also continue as a recurring segment on The Late Late Show.
Apple Music is available in more than 100 countries. The service, which gives subscribers access to more than 30 million songs, costs $9.99 per month.
While the show is obviously a good fit for Apple Music, it's still surprising that CBS didn't put the series on its own fledgling streaming service, CBS All Access.
Executive producers had initially been dismissive of efforts to spin off Carpool Karaoke, as The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon had done with Lip Sync Battle on Spike. "The trickier thing about that is Lip Sync Battle can exist without Jimmy Fallon, but Carpool Karaoke can't really exist without James Corden," executive producer Rob Crabbe told Entertainment Weekly.
But that changed in February, when Spike announced its plans for a half-hour special called Caraoke Showdown, which also combines cars and karaoke.
"We're disappointed with that. We're disappointed that our idea would be taken by somebody else," Winston told Adweek in February, in his first public comments about the Spike news. "We're looking at potentially doing our own version instead."
Now Winston has done that, with the news coming shortly after Spike announced that it had greenlit 10 episodes of Caraoke Showdown, and will debut that series, hosted by Craig Robinson, next year.
"We love music, and Carpool Karaoke celebrates it in a fun and unique way that is a hit with audiences of all ages," said Eddy Cue, Apple's svp of internet software and services, in a statement. "It's a perfect fit for Apple Music—bringing subscribers exclusive access to their favorite artists and celebrities who come along for the ride."
"The joy of Carpool is both the intimacy it creates, while seeing the love our passengers have for music. Where better to showcase that than with Apple Music," said Winston in a statement.
Carpool Karaoke videos have been viewed more than 830 million times on YouTube. Corden's segment with Adele is the No. 1 late-night YouTube clip of all time, with 119 million viewers in six months. The most recent segment, with First Lady Michelle Obama, aired last week.
The Spike competition aside, CBS has been looking for ways to monetize Carpool Karaoke all year. Last month, it partnered with McDonald's and Coca-Cola for the first Carpool Karaoke integration.
Jo Ann Ross, president of network sales for CBS, said that integration was "a good template as we go forward" and to look for other Carpool Karaoke partnerships. "A lot of clients are interested in sponsoring it and being a part of it."
