Cablevision Will Offer Hulu Plus to Optimum Customers

First cable provider to distribute the subscription service

Cablevision has reached an agreement with Hulu to offer the company's streaming subscription service, Hulu Plus, to Optimum customers, making it the first cable or satellite provider to distribute the VOD content.

"The partnership with Hulu reflects Cablevision's desire to meet customers where they are," said Kristin Dolan, Cablevision's chief operating officer. "There is a new generation of consumers who access video through the Internet, and whatever their preference, Cablevision will facilitate a great content experience."

Added Tim Connolly, svp distribution for Hulu: "At Hulu we believe users should have the ability to consume their favorite content when, where and how they want. Even with the rapid growth in streaming, there is a huge audience that consumes television through their cable provider, and we want to be there for them too."

Cablevision said it will provide pricing info, a launch date and other specifics in the near future. Hulu Plus is currently available for $7.99 per month on Internet-connected devices like Apple TV, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Fire TV and Chromecast, as well as mobile devices.

The news gives Hulu additional momentum as it heads into Wednesday morning's NewFronts presentation. The company has taken big swings with both original series (including 11/22/63, a limited series from J.J. Abrams and Stephen King) and acquisitions (exclusive SVOD rights to all 18 seasons of South Park) to keep pace with Netflix and Amazon.

Hulu attracts 30 million monthly uniques, and 6 million consumers subscribe to Hulu Plus, but the company plans to announce updated numbers at Wednesday's NewFronts.
