Who really cares about Charles and Camilla?

Royals_in_ny_1In this era of celeb-mania, it must count as an accomplishment of sorts to be a celebrity about whom few people care. Let us give a respectful tug on our forelocks, then, to Prince Charles and the missus—now embarked upon an official tour of the U.S.—for achieving this distinction. A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll (go to the box of “Related” items and click on “Do Americans want to meet royals?”) asked American adults how interested they are that Charles and Camilla are dropping by. Just 6 percent said they’re “very interested,” while 59 percent said they’re “not interested at all.” Likewise, the 19 percent who would like to meet Charles and Camilla didn’t greatly exceed the 14 percent who’d positively prefer not to meet them, while the remaining 67 percent didn’t care one way or another. Such lack of interest would be unremarkable if Charles were a third-tier celebrity. But he is, of course, one of the best-known people in the world. So, all the more to his credit that he evokes just the sort of indifference we ought to feel toward a foreign monarch-to-be.
