Advertising legend ‘Mr. Whipple’ dies at 91

Whipple
You might feel a certain lingering sadness today in the dry-good aisles of America’s grocery stores. Advertising icon Dick “Mr. Whipple” Wilson has died at age 91. Whether you love or hate “Don’t squeeze the Charmin,” it’s hard to question the campaign’s endurance. Born in Britain and raised in Canada, Wilson was a uniquely American icon who clocked more than 500 ads as the same obsessive-compulsive character. He also inspired one of the best advertising books around. In honor of his passing, I hereby pledge to take at least one week off from bear-hugging my bathroom supplies. It’s what he would have wanted.
