American Express CMO and 37-Year Vet Elizabeth Rutledge Retires

Financial services giant said it expects to announce a successor in the coming weeks

American Express CMO Elizabeth Rutledge will retire in March 2027 after more than three decades with the financial institution, the company confirmed Thursday.

“She has made an enduring impact on the brand, and her successor is expected to be announced in the coming weeks,” an American Express spokesperson said.

Rutledge shared the news in a LinkedIn post on Thursday (Oct. 15).

She joined American Express in 1990, before rising up to hold leadership roles across disciplines including marketing, card products and benefits, and global advertising and brand management. The company named her chief marketing officer in 2018.

“Almost 37 years ago, I walked into the American Express Tower in New York City to fulfill a dream: to work for a company known for its iconic brand, marketing prowess, and extraordinary people,” Rutledge wrote.
