Black-ish Spinoff Mixed-ish Will Debut Sept. 24 as ABC Locks In Its Fall Premieres

All five broadcast networks have now set their fall premiere dates, as ABC locked in its rollout plans for the upcoming 2019-20 season today. Its Black-ish spinoff Mixed-ish—which focuses on the childhood of Rainbow Johnson (the Black-ish character played by Tracee Ellis Ross) and her experiences growing up in a mixed-race family—will debut on Tuesday, Sept. 24, the network said. And Modern Family’s 11th and final season will kick off on Wednesday, Sept. 25. As is the case with rivals NBC, CBS and Fox, almost all of ABC’s fall shows will roll out the week of Sept. 23, the first week of the 2019-20 season. After taking the spring off, Dancing With the Stars will return Monday, Sept. 16, a week before the new season. (“We’re going after bigger stars than we have a long time,” new ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke told reporters in May). The Good Doctor will premiere a week later, on Sept. 23. Tuesday, Sept. 24, will see the debut of The Conners, followed by Bless This Mess, Mixed-ish and Black-ish, with new drama Emergence capping the night. The Wednesday comedy block, intact from last season, returns Sept. 25: The Goldbergs, Goldbergs spinoff Schooled, Modern Family and Single Parents. The night ends with new drama Stumptown. Thursday, Sept. 26, will see the premiere of dramas Grey’s Anatomy, A Million Little Things and How to Get Away With Murder. The relocated American Housewife has its debut on Friday, Sept. 27, followed by Fresh Off the Boat, and two hours of 20/20. Sunday, Sept. 29, features America’s Funniest Home Videos, Shark Tank and drama The Rookie. One week later, on Oct. 6, the revival of the classic variety show Kids Say the Darndest Things (hosted and executive produced by Tiffany Haddish) will premiere. ABC is debuting just four new series this fall (including the Kids Say the Darndest Things revival), compared with seven a year ago, “which was just too many,” Burke told reporters in May. Going forward,“we’ll only be launching the few [shows] that we think can break through.” With ABC’s announcement today, all of the broadcast networks have now locked in their fall premieres. CBS was first out of the gate early last month, followed by NBC and The CW, and most recently, Fox. ABC was also the final broadcaster to finalize its fall plans last year. But in 2018, the network needed extra time to fill the unexpected hole in its schedule caused by the cancellation of Roseanne, just two weeks after its upfront event, due to star Roseanne Barr’s racist tweet. Its replacement, of course, was the Barr-free Roseanne spinoff The Conners. Some of its broadcast rivals have finished their upfront negotiations, but ABC hasn't crossed the finish line yet. This is Disney ad sales chief Rita Ferro's first combined upfront, which includes not only ABC, Freeform and ESPN, but the TV networks Disney acquired from Fox in March, like FX and National Geographic.
