Updated: TNT’s Hawthorne Draws Solid Sampling

Nearly 4 million viewers on Tuesday night checked in for a first look at TNT’s newest original series, the Jada Pinkett Smith hospital drama Hawthorne.

According to Nielsen live-plus-same-day ratings data, Hawthorne delivered 3.83 million viewers in the 9 p.m. time slot, of which 1.64 million were members of the adults 25-54 demo. The premiere also served up 1.57 million viewers 18-49.

Leading out of Hawthorne at 10 p.m., TNT’s third-season franchise Saving Grace held on to 91 percent of the previous hour’s audience, drawing 3.47 million viewers. While the Saving Grace premiere out-delivered its season-two average by 4 percent, the third season opener fell 33 percent from its July 14, 2008, sophomore season launch, which drew 5.16 million viewers.

Of course, in moving Grace to Tuesday, TNT separated the series from its established lead-in. During last season’s dual premiere, the Holly Hunter vehicle reaped the benefit of The Closer’s lead-in audience of 7.81 million viewers.

Grace retained the lion’s share of Hawthorne’s demo, averaging 1.57 million adults 25-54, or 96 percent of the prior-hour draw. The show also served up 1.18 million viewers 18-49, or 75 percent of its lead-in.

While Hawthorne’s sampling was encouraging, the premiere of Mark Burnett’s new unscripted series, Wedding Day, was something of a disappointment. The 8 p.m. series opener drew 853,000 total viewers, 396,000 of which were viewers 18-49.

Wedding Day also delivered 341,000 adults 25-54 and 225,000 viewers 18-34.
