Information Diet: Josh Charles

The 'Good Wife' star confesses his prediliction for print

Adweek: What’s the first information you consume in the morning?

Josh Charles: When I’m filming, my mornings are generally really rushed, so I don’t always have the luxury to sit down and read the paper. But I do scroll through the news on my Twitter feed.

AW: What do you read or watch or listen to at the breakfast table?

JC: The New York Times, The New Yorker, The New Republic, The Huffington Post, The Economist, AlterNet, and Politico, and Nikki Finke for all my Hollywood info. On the weekends my girlfriend Sophie and I usually listen to NPR—I love This American Life.

AW: What occupies your mind in the car, on the subway, train, or bus?

JC: When I’m in the car heading to the set, my thoughts are usually on the scenes I’m about to shoot. Because I often travel between Baltimore [where I have family] and New York City, I’ve grown to really love traveling by train. It’s a great time to read a good book, catch up on emails, or just listen to music.

AW: Are you a TV junkie, or on an airtime-restricted diet?

JC: Actually, I’m a DVR junkie. Currently on my DVR: Real Time With Bill Maher, Frontline, The First 48, Eastbound and Down, and South Park. Unfortunately, my girlfriend cannot live without The Real Housewives of Who Cares.

AW: If you’re a couch potato, what do you watch, and how: TV, laptop, or tablet?

JC: I watch shows on the iPad when at work or traveling. If I’m watching TV at home, though, then I consume programs the old-fashioned way: on a big-ass TV.

AW: Before bed, do you: bite into a novel; graze on Twitter; or fast until morning?

JC: I’m pretty sure that handheld gadgets have meaningfully contributed to my insomnia, so lately I’ve been trying to fast as much as possible. But when I’m not fasting, I read and graze.

AW: Which is more nutritious: print or Web?

JC: I think print is more nutritious, but the Web is the fast food we can’t stop eating. Even though I’m reading more on the iPad, given the choice, I prefer the physicality of holding a book in my hands.

AW: Give us the skinny on your favorite app.

JC: Hipstamatic. The other night on the set of The Good Wife I turned a few of my co-stars on to it, and pretty soon everyone was taking pictures in between takes. It’s the ultimate in “new technology meets old-school vibe.”

AW: What’s your biggest digital indulgence?

JC: I enjoy the NFL Sunday Ticket on DirecTV and the MLB.TV package. No matter where I’m at or what I’m doing, as long as I have a Wi-Fi connection, I can watch the Ravens or Orioles play on my iPad.

AW: With such a bloated media universe, how do you cut out the fat?

JC: You cut out Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. They are the trans fats of the media world.
