Analysis: Oprah’s OWN Network (TCA Video)

When Discovery Communications announced in 2008 its plans to launch the Oprah Winfrey Network, few industry analysts bet against it. After all, even if Winfrey drew a small percentage of the 6 million or so loyal viewers of her syndicated talk show, it would make a dent in the ratings.

And, of course, it did.

During the network’s debut weekend beginning Saturday, Jan. 1, the cable network drew more than 1 million viewers in such highly trafficked time slots as 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., when Oprah: Behind the Scenes ran.
In the first installment of Adweek’s TCA cable roundup, Marc Berman and Alan Frutkin look at cable’s newest network and discuss Winfrey’s surprising appearance at the TV Critics Association press tour earlier this month.
